The identification, zoning and protection of the ecologically sensitive areas of Maputo’s region were the starting point for the definition of a municipal ecologic zoning plan. It sought to counter the environmental degradation process and contribute to an efficient and integrated management of the urban and environmental dynamics, creating opportunities to enhance urban quality in line with the protection of environmentally sensitive areas.
The studies performed by the partnership between Nemus and BETA resorted to geographic information systems and field work in order to perform a territorial and biophysical characterization. It also included the environmental diagnosis and the development of the ecologic zoning plan, the strategy for the protection of sensitive areas, the spatial plan and the plan for the management of sensitive areas, the specific regulation proposal to coach the interventions in these areas, the production of a manual and the organization of a training course in regard to the installation and management of sensitive areas.
