The environmental restoration project performed by Nemus on the beaches of Maluada and Calheta de S. Martinho aimed to recover the coastal landscapes, which were very degraded by the numerous sand extraction locations, and at the same time create the conditions to support recreational and leisure activities along the shoreline.
Some of the actions performed include the beach nourishment to restore part of the sediment that was naturally removed during the last 25 years, the treatment of streams by reshaping and stabilizing the banks, the recovery of the shoreface and adjacent areas in order to delineate the sand area and minimize wind and water erosion problems and the landscape restoration of the entire beach area and respective access.
This environmental recovery project on the southern coast of the Santiago Island is part of an improvement of one of the largest tourism developments in the Cape Verde archipelago.
