Public Meetings for ESIA Draft Report Presentation – Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Lake Malawi Water Supply Project for Lilongwe City
Lilongwe Water Board intends to implement the Lake Malawi Water Supply Project for Lilongwe City in order to tackle current water supply limitations, and, hence, sustain reliable water supply services to its customers. The project will also expand access to potable water to areas along the Lilongwe–Salima corridor namely: Salima Boma, Mvera and Chezi.
The project involves abstraction of water from Lake Malawi (Leopard bay, Salima) through a 2-km long pipeline up to the Lifuwu Water Treatment Works and, from there, the transportation of treated water through an approximately 110 km long conveyance pipeline to Lilongwe City (Kanengo reservoirs).
Environmental protection is a constitutional precept in Malawi, as inscribed in the Constitution of Malawi. Environmental Impact Assessment is a statutory requirement regulated by the Environment Management Act (EMA; No.23 of 1996).
The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) were assigned to a specialised consultant, NEMUS. The process involves public consultation, including publicising the ESIA/RAP Draft Reports. All contributions from stakeholders during the process will be integrated in the Final Reports.
Three public meetings will be held for the presentation of the ESIA Draft Report and discussion of its contents. Information will be accessible for public review and comment (On-site at each meeting and at Lilongwe Water Board office). It will also be available online, in the links below.
The meetings will be held at:
- Salima – District Council Chamber – 6th March 2018 (10h);
- Dowa – District Council Chamber – 7th March 2018 (10h);
- Lilongwe – District Council Chamber – 8th March 2018 (10h).
The assigned consultant will make a presentation of the work developed so far and a discussion will follow.
