Release of Public Consultations Calendar for the RBMP-SF
On 11 February, the Executive Board of the Watershed Committee of the São Francisco River met with Nemus to set the dates for the public consultations and thematic workshops of the new River Basin Management Plan for the São Francisco river (Brazil). The new plan features a strong public participation component which will result in 12 public consultations and 20 thematic workshops in five different States, over a period of 3 months.
The 20 workshops are thematic (five distinct themes are repeated in the four physiographic regions of the São Francisco basin) and will feature 20 specialists (in each workshop) discussing a theme related to the multiple uses of water, for one day (7 hours). Public consultations are open sessions (expected audience of about 100 people each) and last 4 hours. Their purpose is to reveal and promote the work in progress and the importance of this Plan.
In November 2014 Nemus won the international tender to develop the new River Basin Management Plan for the São Francisco river, one of the most important waterways in Brazil and South America, with a total length of almost 3.000 km and an area of over 600.000 km². The new plan will contain updated data and new action plans, considering several different matters: existing and predicted water needs in what concerns quality and quantity, conflict management between demanding sectors and communities and also plans to deal with extreme situations and risk (drought, floods amongst others).
